Jean Claude Thompson
Jean-Claude Thompson was a Haitian-born warehouse worker who lived in West Baltimore with his wife, Marva Thompson. He emigrated to the United States around 1995 and worked in a warehouse for more than twenty years. He and Marva were the parents of Jamal Thompson.
Early Life and Background
Jean-Claude was born in Haiti in August 1972. He emigrated at approximately twenty-three years old and settled in Baltimore around 1995.
His father died around 2000. After the death, Jean-Claude assumed greater responsibility for supporting members of his extended family in Haiti. He continued that support while working in Baltimore.
Personality
Jean-Claude was quiet, steady, patient, and oriented toward practical responsibility. He usually expressed care by working, providing, or remaining nearby rather than through lengthy conversation.
He also minimized his own illness. As his respiratory symptoms worsened, he continued working and did not always give Jamal a complete account of his health.
Cultural Identity and Heritage
Jean-Claude was born and raised in Haiti and remained connected to relatives there after emigrating. His household in Baltimore included both his Haitian background and Marva’s Jamaican background.
Speech and Communication Patterns
Jean-Claude spoke English, Haitian Creole, and French. He used Creole with family and during emotionally intimate conversations. His everyday speech was economical, and he often relied on quiet presence or brief, direct statements.
Health and Disabilities
Jean-Claude developed COPD with chronic bronchitis from prolonged workplace exposure to warehouse dust and chemicals. His symptoms included persistent coughing, breathlessness during exertion, reduced stamina, difficulty climbing stairs, and inhaler use.
In July 2021, Jean-Claude was hospitalized after vomiting during a coughing episode and aspirating into his lungs. He was treated for aspiration pneumonia after his oxygen saturation fell dangerously low.
Major Events
2010 Haiti Earthquake
The 2010 Haiti earthquake killed Jean-Claude’s brother Philippe, Philippe’s wife Nadege, their unborn child, and their three children.
